Good Afternoon ifamilyhistory members !
On our FB page we posted about John Dennis transporting 7 persons to the new world in 1649 for 350 acres. On our FB page Friday we posted a "Little Known Facts" which mentioned that approximately 35 million Americans share DNA with at least one person that was on the Mayflower. This does not include all the people that landed 10 to 15 years later in 1630-1650. There were another group of colonists that are not mentioned in the history books probably due to classroom time contstraints. The other group of people were just normal people that emigrated to the colonies from the UK and other parts of the world that were farmers, land progenitors, surveyers, businessmen and convicts. On our FB page we uploaded a short list of people that John Dennis transported over to Virgina. So your probably wondering who was John Dennis ? Those were my thoughts exactly when I was researching his seven tranportees for a customer.
In the book "Cavaliers and Pioneers, Patent Book 2, pg. 183. It states that on "September 15, 1649, John Dennis was given 350 acres, scituated at great Wicocomoco, bounded on the northern parts with a branch of said river, on the southern part by a small branch, parting same from land of Thomas Gascogne and making this a neck of land. For transporting seven persons: Richard Parker, Christopher Walsgrave, Barbery Dennis, Robert Swanson, Thomas Long, Thomas Acties--a servant of Capt Stoner." It is not clear as to weather these people he was transporting were indentured servants or business associates.
After some research I found out that John Dennis was a Shareholder in the Virginia Company. The Virginia Company. Records show a John Dennis purchasing 20 Virginia Company shares about March 20, 1621. Apparently John Dennis transported a lot of people to the new world and was rewarded with land each time. After further research I found that one of the seven people that Dennis transported was a Robert Swanson who was a tabacco planter on Dennis's land. After Robert Swanson passed away Dennis married Robert's wife Barbary. After Dennis passed away he left a part of his land to his sons and a John Swanson who was Robert Swanson's son. After researching this one shareholder of the Virginia Company back in the 1600's you can see how involved the colonists were in trade and the business of land and growing tabacco in Virginia.
Attached are some references regarding John Dennis and the his transportees. The reference sheet also shows simple land grants and other land grants for transported persons.
